Modern Warships Controls

PC keybinds, mobile gestures, and aircraft control schemes — configured before your first ranked match.

Controls

Modern Warships feels completely different depending on your input device and aircraft control scheme. A destroyer captain on keyboard-and-mouse can snap turrets and flare-dodge with precision; the same player on mobile relies on touch zones and optional aim assist. Carrier mains face an extra fork: arcade versus professional aircraft controls change how strike runs and evasive rolls behave. Configure everything in the port settings screen before queuing — rebinding mid-match is how you eat a full ATMACA salvo while fumbling menus.

Where to find settings

Open Menu → Settings → Controls (wording may vary slightly by platform). Separate tabs usually cover:

  • Ship movement and camera
  • Weapons and target locking
  • Aircraft and helicopter inputs
  • UI scale and sensitivity

Test changes in offline mode — see Getting Started — before taking a rebind into ranked.

PC keyboard and mouse

Default PC bindings follow familiar WASD shooter logic with naval twists:

ActionTypical defaultNotes
Move forward / backW / SAffects ship throttle
Turn / strafeA / DCombined with mouse camera
Primary gunsLeft mouseHold for continuous fire
Missiles / secondaryNumber keys or mouse sideRebind to comfortable keys
Flares / countermeasuresDedicated key (often F or Space)Must be reachable under panic
Aircraft deployFunction or letter keyPractice until muscle memory
HelicopterSeparate deploy keyDo not confuse with strike aircraft
Map / pingM or middle mouseObjective communication
Binoculars / zoomShift or scrollGun lead practice

Mouse sensitivity

Start at 50–70% sensitivity and adjust after ten offline matches. Too high causes overshoot on fast frigates; too low misses aircraft intercepts. Disable mouse acceleration in Windows for consistent flick shots.

  • Bind flares to a key your left hand hits without looking — Space or Q are popular.
  • Put missile volleys on mouse side buttons if available.
  • Increase UI scale on 1440p+ monitors so touch-style buttons remain readable.

Steam players should confirm Steam Input is not remapping your binds unexpectedly — especially if you use a Steam Deck or controller overlay.

Mobile touch controls

Mobile uses on-screen joysticks and context buttons:

  • Left virtual stick — throttle and rudder.
  • Right drag — camera and aim.
  • Fire button — often auto-locks nearest valid target with assist enabled.
  • Missile icon — tap to salvo; some builds require hold-to-confirm.
  • Flare button — usually bottom-right; enlarge it in settings if you mis-tap.
  • Aircraft / heli icons — separate slots on the action bar.

Mobile tips

  • Play on stable Wi-Fi or offline when learning — touch latency on weak connections doubles misfires.
  • Reduce graphics if frame rate drops below 30 FPS; stutter breaks flare timing.
  • Optional auto-aim helps beginners but teaches bad lead habits — disable once you understand gun range.

Arcade vs professional aircraft controls

When you deploy carrier strike aircraft or certain wing units, Modern Warships offers two control philosophies:

Arcade aircraft controls

  • Forgiving turn radius and assisted leveling.
  • Simplified pitch/yaw — good for Getting Started players and phone screens.
  • Lower skill ceiling but faster learning for missile run-ins.

Professional aircraft controls

  • Manual pitch, roll, and throttle management.
  • Tighter turns possible for veterans; easier to stall or crash for newcomers.
  • Better for competitive strike timing and evading AA in Clan Wars.

Switch schemes in Settings → Aircraft Controls. Try arcade for ten offline sorties, then graduate to professional if you main carriers. The Tier List ranks carrier hulls assuming you can land consistent strikes — professional controls help reach that bar.

Helicopter spotting uses a lighter model than strike aircraft but still benefits from smooth camera control. Practice low passes behind islands before spotting in ranked — details in How to Play.

Helicopter-specific inputs

Helicopters deploy from a separate action slot:

  • Deploy — launches from your ship.
  • Ascend / descend — altitude control for line-of-sight spotting.
  • Mark target — exposes enemies to teammates.
  • Return / swap back — recall before AA deletes the heli.

Bind heli deploy away from flare keys to avoid accidental double-taps under missile lock.

Controls and ship class

Different hulls emphasize different inputs:

  • Destroyers — flare key speed and missile cooldown tracking.
  • Frigates — gun lead and AA toggles.
  • Carriers — aircraft scheme choice dominates skill expression.
  • Submarines — depth and torpedo lead (map dependent).

See Ship Classes for role summaries. Use the Playstyle Picker if you are deciding which inputs to optimize first.

Sensitivity for missiles and flares

Missile combat is timing-based. Your controls must support:

  1. Lock — acquire target without overshooting camera.
  2. Fire — release volley.
  3. Flare — within half a second of inbound warning.
  4. Reposition — break line of sight behind terrain.

Drill the sequence in offline mode until flares fire before impact. Then read Missile and Flare Tactics for when not to flare — wasting countermeasures leaves you naked for the second salvo.

Accessibility and rebind strategy

  • Larger touch buttons for players with smaller screens.
  • Toggle versus hold for sustained fire — pick what reduces finger fatigue.
  • Color-blind modes for missile warning icons when available.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What are the best keybinds for flares on PC?

Bind flares to an easy left-hand key like Space or Q that you can hit instantly when missile warnings appear. Avoid keys shared with aircraft deploy.

Should I use arcade or professional aircraft controls?

New players and mobile users should start with arcade. Switch to professional if you main carriers and need tighter strike runs for ranked or clan wars.

Do Steam and mobile controls sync?

Control settings are per device, but account progress can sync if you link correctly. See Steam Cross-Progress for login pitfalls.

How do I deploy helicopters on mobile?

Tap the helicopter icon on the action bar, separate from strike aircraft. Use altitude controls to spot behind cover and mark targets for your team.

Can I change controls mid-match?

You can open settings during a match, but rebind practice belongs in offline mode. Mid-fight changes disrupt muscle memory and get you killed.
